Pikopiko (Asplenium bulbiferum), also known as the hen & chickens fern or mother spleenwort, is a terrestrial forest fern that flourishes in the cool, shaded understorey of Aotearoa’s ngahere. With graceful fronds that carry tiny babies, it embodies the spirit of motherhood, offering shelter and nurturing new life.
For Māori, pikopiko has long been valued for both its nourishment and its symbolism. Its tender shoots — the “bush asparagus” — were gathered as a forest kai, while its unfurling fronds came to represent renewal, growth, and the gentle care of the natural world.
This jewellery piece carries the mauri of pikopiko — a reminder to nourish body and spirit, to welcome new beginnings with each season.
Created with aroha and respect for tikanga Māori, each piece honours the fern’s mana.
➡️ Wearing pikopiko is an embrace of nourishment, healing, and the promise of new beginnings.
